Conduct & Consequences

Attention Members -- Beginning immediately, Yates Field House will strictly enforce the University Code of Conduct.  Yates will forward all student violators to the Office of Student Conduct.  Non-student members will be disciplined by management.

Inappropriate Conduct

Anyone who behaves in a manner inconsistent with Yates Field House rules and regulations set forth in the Policies & Procedures, or fails to follow Georgetown University policy or law will be asked to leave the Field House.

Yates Field House management may suspend or revoke membership privileges in accordance with Field House Policy.  In addition, students who fail to uphold these standards will have that information forwarded to the Office of Student Conduct.

The building supervisors will determine the safety of all activities in accordance with Field House policy.  The management of Yates reserves the right to revise these regulations in the best interest of the membership.  Revisions of the Policies & Procedures will be posted.

Examples of inappropriate behavior include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Disorderly Conduct - Unruly actions that annoy, disturb, interfere with or offend others regardless of their intent.
  • Disruption - Any action which disrupts or obstructs functions of the Yates Field House.
  • Harassment - Any intimidating, hostile, or offensive act which is intentional or persistent.
  • Physical/Verbal Abuse - Any intentional touching, or attempt or threat of touching, by a student that results in physical or emotional injury to any person or places any person in fear of imminent bodily harm.
  • Theft - Taking personal property or services without the permission of the owner or caretaker.
  • Personal Damage - Action by any individual or group of individuals that results in the loss of or harm to another's personal property or to Yates Field House property.  Malicious intent or negligence will be considered in the application of sanctions.
  • Abuse or Transfer of ID Cards - When requested by a Yates Field House or University official, individuals are required to produce their official University ID card.  Use of an ID card by anyone other than the person to whom it is issued - even if the card has been voluntarily transferred - is prohibited.
  • Noncompliance with Officials - All students are expected to respect and comply with the directions of Yates Field House staff, who are performing their official duties as assigned by University authorities.
  • Violations of University Regulations - Students are expected to comply with University regulations set forth in the Student Code of Conduct and all other relevant University policies.
  • Violations of Local Laws and Statutes - The University and its members are also subject to all District of Columbia and federal laws and statutes.  Alleged violations of local laws and statutes which occur on or off campus are subject to internal University investigation, review and action in addition to any action by the proper civil authorities.  Each member of the community is individually responsible for being informed of the law.  Ignorance of federal or District of Columbia law will not be accepted as an excuse for prohibited conduct.

Step Process

The step system applies to all members.  The criteria for warnings and removal apply to all members.  In addition, these consequences can be a part of any ruling from the Office of Student Conduct.

Warning
A warning should be given to all individuals who violate posted rules (for example, dunking or free-shooting during full court games).  A manager may use his/her discretion to warn any individual involved in "trash-talking."  The warning should inform the offender that if the confrontation escalates to a physical confrontation, the trash-talker will be treated as the instigator.

Removal - Step 1
Step 1 is utilized for individuals who have repeated WARNING offenses or individuals involved in verbal abuse.  The individual's membership should be suspended until they speak with management and have the system explained to them.

Suspension - Step 2
Step 2 applies to any physical abuse or to any repeat Step 1 incidents.  A Step 2 offense requires a suspension of membership for a minimum of 1 week.

Expulsion - Step 3
Step 3 applies to any excessive incidents, or to a 3rd Step 1 offense or a second Step 2 offense.  Step 3 dictates an immediate revocation of membership.  This revocation should last for at least a set number of months if it isn't permanent.
