Red Cross Certification Classes

The Yates Field House offers a variety of American Red Cross certification classes.  The classes listed below will be offered each semester. 


Winter/Spring 2010

Lifeguard Training // CPR for the Professional Rescuer // Adult CPR // First Aid



Lifeguard Training

Session I - February 19-21, 26-28
Session II - April 30-May1-2, May 7-8
Session III - May 14-16, May 21-23
 

Schedule (6 classes)   Friday-6:30-9:30pm 
                                  Saturday and Sunday - 10:00am-5:00pm

 

This class teaches lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies at an aquatic facility.  Upon successful completion of the course, each student will receive Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. 
The lifeguard candidate must be 15 years of age by the completion of the course.  The student must also pass a pre-test to take the class.  Registration fee will be refunded if candidate does not pass the pre-course. No refund for failing the class.  Attendance for all sessions required. 
 

Pre- course test includes: 
1.  Swimming 300 yards continuously using the following strokes in the following order:  100 yards of freestyle (crawlstroke) - 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of either freestyle or breaststroke. 
2.  Swim 20 yards of freestyle or breaststroke, submerge to 10 ft and pick up a 10 lb brick, holding it with both hands return 20 yards and exit pool in 1 minute and 40 seconds. 

Fees:  - $200 -students/members*  $250- non-members*
     * fee includes Red Cross Lifeguard Training book and 
                       CPR pocket mask.

Lifeguard Recertification

Participants in the Lifeguarding recertificatioin course must have successfully completed the American Red Cross course within the last four years and a CPR for the Professional Rescuer course within the last two years.  Proof of prior training should be verified by showing an American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates.  Lifeguarding/First Aid certificates are valid for three years.  CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate is valid for one year. 

Session I:  April 16,17,18

Fees:  $80students/members  $100 for non-members**

CPR for the Professional Rescuer
 
Recertification Classes       

The purpose of this course is to train professional rescuers (those with a duty to act and provide care) in the skills necessary to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies, including the use of an automated external defibirllator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. This course is required for lifeguards and certification is good for one year. 

 Re-certification:  **$40 students/members  **$60 non-members
 * *does not include mask or book, these items maybe purchased for an additional fee if student does not own them. 

 Minimum enrollment:  4

Adult CPR/AED
 

This course provides instruction in caring for breathing emergencies, performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest.  Certification is valid for one year.  Class length: 4 hours

Fees:  $40 students/members  $55 non-members

Minimum enrollment:  4
 



First Aid

The purpose of this course is to train individuals in the skills necessary to recongize and provide first aid care for injuries and sudden illness until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.  The course does not include information on breathing or cardiac emergencies.

  


 

Custom Classes
Available for groups or departments seeking certification.  Fees vary with the number of participants, length and type of class.  For details please call Yates Field House Main office at 202-687-2400. 

 

Registration Procedures

All American Red Cross classes held at Yates Field House are open to the students and staff of Georgetown University as well as the public.  Registration is on first come first serve basis.  If we do not have our minimum enrollment  prior to the class start date, the class will be cancelled. 

You may register for the classes either over the phone at 202-687-2400 or in person at the Yates Field House main office.  Payment must be made with registration.  We accept cash, check, mastercard, visa and American Express. 

Refund policy for All American Red Cross Classes

Full refunds will be available only to those who sign up for a course that is ultimately cancelled or who withdraws from a course 48 hours or more days prior to the start date. 
No refund will be given to anyone who withdraws from the class on the day of or at any point following the scheduled start date.

Sat & Sun:  9:00am-9:30pm

 

Beginning, Wednesday March 18th - April 25th ,  lanes 1-8 will be closed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:00-5:30pm for varsity swim team practice.  The diving well will remain open during those times.
