Sportsmanship

Maintaining proper sportsmanship is a primary objection of Georgetown Intramurals.  Teams, participants & spectators that endanger the positive culture of intramural events will be subject to removal and further consequence in accordance with the Yates Field House Conduct & Consequences Policy.  Certain violations may also be reported to Office of Student Conduct in accordance with Georgetown University policies.

Sportsmanship infractions by non-student participants may result in suspension or cancellation of Yates Field House membership.

Examples of inappropriate behavior include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Abuse of officials, including profanity and excessive disruptions
• Physical and/or verbal abuse of intramural participants or spectators
• Abuse of intramural equipment or facilities
• Technical Fouls // Unsportsmanlike conduct penalties // Game ejections

Sportsmanship Rating

To better promote the spirit of sportsmanship, IM officials and supervisors will issue a 'Sportsmanship Rating' for participating teams at the conclusion of each game.  Captains must acknowledge the sportsmanship rating by signing the game sheet.  Ratings from each game will be averaged over the course of each intramural event.  Teams must maintain a minimum sportsmanship rating (3.0) in order to be eligible for the playoffs.  Teams must also maintain a (3.0) rating during playoffs to continue participation.  Both player and spectator behavior are considered for sportsmanship ratings.

Rating Scale

IM Officials will follow a consistent scale for sportsmanship ratings.  HOWEVER, the final rating is at the discretion of IM Officials and may not identically follow the suggested scale.

(4.0) - (3.8):  A team, its players and spectators, maintained a high level of sportsmanship throughout the contest.

(3.7) - (3.5):  Players and/or spectators generally maintain sportsmanship, with minimal complaints and disruptions.

(3.4) - (3.0):  Incidental verbal profanity; Verbal complaints and disruptions from players and/or spectators; Physical or unsportsmanlike play not necessarily resulting in a penalty.

a (3.0) rating is the highest possible rating for a team that was issued any sportsmanship related penalty (i.e. unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, technical fouls, yellow cards, etc).

(2.9) - (2.0):  Penalties/Fouls for unsportsmanlike behavior; Persistent dissent towards intramural staff; Verbal abuse (including profanity) of opponents or officials; Excessively physical or unsportsmanlike play despite previous warnings and/or penalties.

a (2.0) rating is the highest possible rating for a team that was issued any ejection from unsportsmanlike behavior.  A (2.0) rating will also be issued for forfeits.

(1.9) - (1.0):  An ejection has been issued; Severe verbal abuse of opponents or officials; General disrespect of intramurals and its policies and procedures.

a (1.0) rating is automatically issued for any forfeit caused by using an ineligible player.

(0.9) - (0.0):  Intentional and willfull lack of cooperation and disrespect for intramurals and its participants and staff; Destruction of intramural equipment or facilities; Any and all physical abuse or verbal threats of intramural participants or staff.

Appeals

Team captains may appeal sportsmanship ratings for specific games.  In order to file an appeal, captains must send an e-mail titled "Sportsmanship Rating Appeal" to intramurals@georgetown.edu within 24 hours of the game in question.  The e-mail should describe the team name, game time, and reason for the appeal.  The IM Office will then contact you and process the appeal.
