Divisions of Competition

In many intramural events, competition will be divided into 'divisions of play.'  These divisions are intended to guarantee parity and fairness in an effort to provide the best recreational experience.  These divisions also include restrictions which are meant to prevent roster and eligibility violations.

Typical 'divisions of play' are listed as follows:

Open A:  The most competitive division of play in a given event.  Both men and women are eligible to compete in Open A, and there are no gender ratio restrictions.  A participant may NOT participate in multiple Open divisions.  Male participants may participate in an Open division and a Coed division.

Open B:  A more recreational division of play.  Games are still competitive, but the level of play is not elite.  Both men and women are eligible to compete in Open B, and there are no gender ratio restrictions.  (Note:  in some cases, there may also be an Open C division).  A participant may NOT participate in multiple Open divisions.  Male participants may participate in an Open division and a Coed division.

Grad Open:  A specific open division of play for graduate students, faculty, staff and non-student Yates members.  When present, graduate students MUST ONLY compete in the grad open division -- they will not be eligible for other Open divisions.  Both men and women are eligible to compete in Grad Open, and there are no gender ratio restrictions.  Male participants may participate in an Open division and a Coed division.

Coed:  A mixed gender division with gender ratio requirements.  For example, during 7-on-7 Soccer, a minimum of three (3) players on the field MUST be women.  In some instances, Coed may be divided into 'A' and 'B' divisions.

Grad Coed:  A mixed gender division specific to graduate students, faculty, staff and non-student Yates members.  When present, graduate students MUST ONLY compete in the grad coed division -- they will not be eligible for other Coed divisions.

Women:  A division of play available to female participants only.  Female participants may compete in this division in addition to a Coed division.
